Casting Details
One of the true icons of the Redline era, the Deora was one of the original “Sweet 16” Hot Wheels released in 1968. Designed by Harry Bentley Bradley, Mattel’s very first Hot Wheels designer, the Deora was based on his real-life custom show truck and helped define the bold, imaginative style that made Hot Wheels an instant success.
When Bradley joined Mattel, he brought the Deora design with him. The addition of two surfboards in the bed, suggested by Mattel co-founder Elliot Handler, gave the truck the perfect California custom look that Mattel was seeking for its new line of die-cast cars.
The Deora was also unique among the original Hot Wheels because it came with four small wheels rather than the typical large-and-small wheel combination found on most early castings. Early Hong Kong-produced examples are often found with four deep-dish wheels, making them especially desirable to collectors today.
More than 55 years later, the Deora remains one of the most recognizable and beloved castings ever produced by Hot Wheels and a cornerstone of any Redline collection.
