1971- Boss Hoss

The 1971 Redline Boss Hoss rolled onto shelves after first debuting in 1970 as a special mail-in offer for Hot Wheels Collector’s Club members. Its success led Mattel to chrome up other favorites like the Heavy Chevy and King Cuda.

By ’71, the Boss Hoss hit the pegs in a rainbow of colors, but two variations became collector favorites. The rare “Overchrome” versions were leftover club cars—extra shiny with chromed bases—recycled into regular production. Then there’s the “Black Roof” version, painted flat black to mimic the vinyl roofs that were all the rage back then. Both are highly sought after and a real prize for Redline fans.
